Long before modern medicine, those who lived off the land had their own natural remedies to fight off every kind of disease they encountered. Today, many still understand the benefits of using natural ingredients to heal. Natural ingredients not only fight the impurities in human blood, parasitic infections, bacteria and a host of other malfunctions but they help your body produce its natural illness-fighting cells. If you were lucky enough to grow up with a parent or grandparent who lived in the late 1800’s, you have most likely encountered at least one dose of this powerful antibiotic.
I can remember my first encounter was as a three-year-old with whooping cough. My grandmother grew up in the mountains and had gotten the recipe from her mother, who most likely had gotten it from hers. Being no Mary Poppins, she gave me it straight, not a bit of sugar or rum punch flavoring. I was to encounter this medicine every time I sniffled through my early years and I hated the tasted, although to be fair I thought mushrooms and “naked” shrimp tasted nasty back then too! It worked, however, and today I always have a jar around for winter flu season.
Back then, it wasn’t known why the combination of ingredients worked so well. Today, we have the advantage of knowing the “magical” properties each ingredient lends to the mixture. First, let’s look at the recipe and then explain the why behind the effectiveness of the best natural antibiotic you will ever encounter. The finished mixture is safe for everyone, but be forewarned that the taste is hot!
1. In a bowl, mix together:
- 2 tablespoons of turmeric and
- 2 of grated horseradish,
- a half a cup each of minced garlic and
- minced onion,
- 1/4 cup of grated ginger and
- two of the hottest peppers you can find.
2. Move this mixture to a mason jar. It should fill the jar approximately 2/3 of the way full.
3. Now, pour apple cider vinegar over this mixture to fill the jar the rest of the way.
4. Cover the jar and shake well. For the next two weeks, shake the jar twice a day.
5. At the end of the two weeks, drain the mixture through a sieve, saving the liquid in a clean jar. Make sure the liquid is completely out of the other ingredients. You can either toss these ingredients or use them to flavor dishes you cook.
6. The liquid is given in doses of one tablespoon. You can either take a spoonful every day to try an improve your immune system or use three doses throughout the day when ill. Keep the jar covered but it does not need to be refrigerated.
Why it Works
Each of the ingredients has been found to contain properties that help your body perform at its best.
*Turmeric – Has antibacterial and antifungal properties and helps reduce inflammation. It is also an overall body cleanser.
*Ginger – Is anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antibacterial. Reduces nausea, aids digestion and lowers blood sugar. It also reduces muscle pain.
*Onion – Boosts immunity and is an antibiotic. It helps reduce inflammation and helps increase healthy cholesterol.
*Garlic – Is an antibiotic and antifungal. It helps heart and bone health. Garlic targets bad bacteria but leaves healthy bacteria alone.
*Hot Peppers – Fight inflammation and reduce pain. They boost immunity and clear congestion in the lungs and sinus passages.
*Horseradish – An antibiotic that works great with colds and sinus infections. It clears congestion in both the sinuses and the lungs and has been proven effective in helping with urinary tract infections.
*Apple Cider Vinegar – Fights congestion, aids digestion and calms a sore throat. It lowers cholesterol and improves blood sugar levels. It also boosts your energy.
In order to help with the taste of this antibiotic, you can include two tablespoons of natural honey, which has its own healing properties. For kids, you may want to have something sweet handy, or you may have trouble getting them to stay still after the first dose. There is nothing in this natural antibiotic that will be harmful to either children or pregnant women. The natural ingredients make it the ideal choice over prescription or over-the-counter cold and flu medications that can be harmful to an unborn baby and too powerful for the systems of young children.
Generations of mothers and healers have used this mixture effectively. It may not be the cure for all that ails your family but it can replace many of the medications that fill your medicine cabinet, especially during cold or rainy weather. Whether you use it as a prevention or only when you are ill, it will be something you will want to keep on hand. I no longer find the taste of mushrooms and “naked” shrimp nasty and I have come to think of the taste of this mixture as the taste of health, although I still wish it tasted like rum punch!
